6th Class – Superhero Poems

Relax with a Picture Book!

This free website             justbooksreadaloud.com    has hundreds of picture books read aloud for you to enjoy with your child. You can pause and discuss the story, and also mute the volume on your device so that you and/or your child can read it yourselves! It’s always fun to read picture books over and over, because you see different things in the pictures every time, and this repetition helps your child’s reading confidence also. The stories are grouped according to length, reading ability and author. Registration is free is you want to save your favourite books to easily find them again.

Another lovely website with many great books read aloud by well known actors such as Oprah Winfrey and Kevin Costner, is Storyline Online

Coronavirus books for parents and children to read and enjoy together

Parents – here are two lovely free online books to enjoy with your child. The first one is :

Coronavirus, a book for children which answers key questions about the Coronvirus, the book has wonderful illustrations by Alex Sheffler and was written in consultation with health experts, educationalists and a child psychologist. You may have heard Axel Sheffler being interviewed by Ryan Tubridy.

The second book is Everybody Worries, a picture book for children who are worried about the Coronavirus. This is also lovely for children and parents to read and discuss together, and the text is perfect for beginner readers.

Roots of Empathy

This year, second class have been taking part in the Roots of Empathy programme. We are very lucky to have Maire coming to teach us every Wednesday and Baby R coming to visit our classroom every third week with her mummy.

We have been able to see how she has developed and reached each new milestone. She has now got her first tooth and has mastered crawling. We are very proud of Baby R and all of the skills she has learned.

Reading Eggs – free months trial

Parents may be interested in trying out the Reading Eggs program which is offering a free months’s trial at the moment. Note – a subscription  will automatically begin through Google Play or iTunes after a month, unless you cancel it.

It’s an enjoyable way to practise and have fun reading, and children begin with a wee test to set their starting level. There are maths activities also.
